Lane Preston

Lane Preston is a Houston, Texas native whose imaginative perception started at an early age. His interest in cloud gazing and tinkering with broken things as a child grew into a passion for wood working and image making.

In this collection of objects, their forms and functions were determined by their respective materials. Lane worked with reclaimed lumber and slabs from fallen trees, because of this, the process usually starts with questions, "How can this be made stable, how can this be worked with?". This often means he must remove the decayed and unstable material to reveal an underlying form, a form which he and the material worked together to unveil. It is in the conversation of the material and Lane that the form is able to be spoken into existence, ready to become a vessel of experience.

Lane graduated from SAIC with a BFA in photography and sculpture, and then went on to receive his Master's degree in furniture design from FIDI.
